La Chemex è stata inventata da Peter Schlumbohm nel 1941 a Chicago, USA. Chimico di formazione, Peter comprendeva molto bene l'estrazione del sapore e della caffeina. Questo ha reso la Chemex non solo un bellissimo oggetto di design, ma anche funzionale – probabilmente è per questo che fa parte della collezione permanente del MoMA di New York.

La carta utilizzata per i filtri Chemex è leggermente più spessa del normale, il che garantisce estrazioni incredibilmente pulite, ma richiede una macinatura leggermente più grossolana.
